What You See
The KIA K9 is a mid-size, three-row SUV, which already puts it in a category with few competitors. Though brands have increased the number of EV models they’re introducing, the three-row SUV category is still pretty slim. The Tesla Model Y is a compact SUV with a seven-seat configuration, which makes it a little different, but still a good comparison. Even with an upgrade to captain’s chairs, you still have room for six, making this a practical choice for families.
What You Get
First of all, you get more room inside the KIA EV9 than the Tesla Model Y. Most importantly, the extra room for the third row means kids can stretch out and get comfortable on long rides. Legroom for the third row is significantly more in the EV9, noticeable in the difference in style. The EV9 features a box shape over the curved dome you see with many modern SUVs.
Cargo space is another area where the EV9 takes first place. With all three rows in place, the EV9 has over 20 cubic feet of storage compared to under 13 cubic feet for the Model Y. The difference increases when you fold the third row with the EV9 offering 43.5 cubic feet over 26.6 cubic feet for the Y. When you fold the second and third rows down, Model Y has 72 cubic feet while the EV9 comes with 83.5 cubic feet of storage.
Amenities to Feel Like Home
When traveling long distances with family, you want everyone to be comfortable. Along with having room to stretch out, you also want them to have the amenities to make for a more enjoyable ride. Both Tesla and KIA load their vehicles with some pretty impressive features, such as heated seats, keyless entry, leather upholstery, and navigation system. However, KIA adds a few extras like paddle shifters and ventilated front seats as standard. Satellite radio is standard while massage seats are available on even the base trim of the EV9, but not for the Y.
The two models include some impressive safety tech as well. They feature systems you would expect to find in a higher-end model, such as versions of collision avoidance and blind spot monitoring. The KIA EV9 makes Rear Cross-Traffic Alert standard and a 360-degree camera available, but neither are an option for the base Y. You also get slightly more ground clearance with the EV9, which gives you more confidence to traverse obstacles and rough terrain.
